This CD-ROM was provided by The Planetary Society to be carried aboard the Russain Mars orbiter (Mars 96). Unfortunately, Mars 96 failed at launch on 16 November 1996. The CD contains recorded text, audio and art including science fiction and science fact. It was intended as a gift to future explorers of Mars. Visions of Mars finally arrived (as an archival silica-glass DVD) aboard the Phoenix lander in 2008. (Adapted from The Planetary Society website and the Foreword on the CD by Carl Sagan)
